campaign or your wedding day and you won’t go far wrong. If the car is liable to be MOT tested, you should book an MOT for the day you pick the car up; there is actually a law now which states you can drive the car from the docks to your test centre so long as you have a test booked on the same day. Perhaps you have trade plates, if so you can freely use these to take your car wherever it needs to be. Don’t forget though, that having registered the car in this country you are immediately liable to tax it or declare it off road (standard SORN notification). You will have had all the details of the vehicle for some time before picking it up from the docks and you should have arranged an insurance cover note. Again, you will be able to use this to drive your car for a short while. Or, as a final option for getting an MOT you can pay to have your car transported to the test centre. This can be costly, but some import companies will have contacts of companies who will provide the service to you at cost price. Once you’ve got your MOT you’re ok to get your tax, and then you can get your full insurance cover and you’re ready to go. Presuming you’re buying from a reputable Japanese car importing company you should really know of any problems you are liable to encounter during the MOT and because of how strict the Japanese equivalent is you shouldn’t hit any unforeseen glitches. The last thing you want is to find out your car is going to be in the garage for 4 weeks, so as ever my best advice is to make sure you use a reputable firm who will communicate everything to you every step of the way.
